*Malda Premier League Aims to Put Regional Cricketing Talent in the Spotlight; Shikhar Dhawan Adds Star Power*

*Kolkata:* The Malda Premier League (MPL), a franchise-based T20 cricket tournament, was introduced with the vision of creating a professional platform for emerging cricketers and bringing Malda’s sporting talent into the wider cricketing spotlight. The initiative aimed to strengthen grassroots cricket, encourage youth participation in sports and provide aspiring players from smaller towns and remote areas with opportunities to showcase their abilities in a competitive environment.

Indian cricket star Shikhar Dhawan extended his support to the initiative by sharing a special video message for the MPL press conference. His anticipated presence at the tournament’s opening celebrations in Malda was expected to add further excitement to the event. The organisers also indicated the possibility of an exhibition match featuring Dhawan, subject to final confirmation.

Speaking about the importance of nurturing emerging talent, Shikhar Dhawan said, “Cricket has the power to bring people together and inspire young people to dream big. Initiatives like the Malda Premier League can provide aspiring cricketers with a valuable platform to showcase their talent, gain confidence and learn from competitive experience. I hope the young players make the most of such opportunities and continue working hard towards their goals.”

A major highlight of MPL was its planned player selection process across four cities—Kolkata, Malda, Siliguri and Asansol. The trials were scheduled to commence after Kali Puja, offering aspiring cricketers from different parts of West Bengal an opportunity to demonstrate their skills and compete for a place in the tournament. The selection process aimed to identify promising players, including those from smaller towns and remote areas who often have limited access to organised competitive platforms.

Online registrations were planned through the tournament’s official website, **mldt20.in**, enabling interested players to register for the trials. By extending the selection process across four cities, MPL sought to make participation more accessible and bring regional talent into a structured competitive framework.

The tournament was planned around eight franchises: Mothabari Lions, Harishchandrapur Warriors, Kolkata Tigers, Manikchak Rangers, Gazole Titans, Chanchal Chargers, Kaliachak Kings and English Bazar Royals. The franchise-based format was expected to build local enthusiasm, encourage healthy competition and strengthen the connection between teams and their respective communities.

The proposed team composition included former Ranji Trophy cricketers, professional players and emerging talents selected through the trials. This combination of experience and youthful potential was intended to create an environment where promising players could learn from established cricketers, improve their skills and gain valuable exposure to competitive T20 cricket.

Speaking about the vision behind the league, a representative of the organising body, Choudhury Rural Development Society, said, “The Malda Premier League is an initiative to identify and encourage cricketing talent that often remains undiscovered beyond major sporting centres. Our objective is to provide young cricketers with a professional platform where they can demonstrate their abilities, compete alongside experienced players and work towards fulfilling their sporting ambitions. Through the participation of players from Malda and other cities, we hope to create opportunities that contribute to the growth of grassroots cricket in the region.”

Organised by the Choudhury Rural Development Society, MPL was conceived as more than a conventional sporting competition. Its broader objective was to promote a sporting culture in Malda, encourage young people to participate in organised sports and create a pathway for local cricketers to gain greater visibility. The initiative also sought to strengthen Malda’s identity as an emerging centre for sporting talent.

To enhance the tournament’s presentation and audience reach, the organisers outlined plans for professional match management, modern broadcasting facilities, digital promotion and sponsor engagement. These initiatives were expected to improve the visibility of the competition, attract cricket enthusiasts and create opportunities for businesses and brands to associate with a regional sporting platform.

The league also aimed to bring communities together through cricket by representing different areas through its franchise structure. The participation of teams associated with Malda’s subdivisions, alongside the Kolkata Tigers, was expected to generate local pride and encourage wider interest in the competition.

With its focus on talent identification, professional competition and youth development, the Malda Premier League aimed to establish itself as a significant addition to the region’s sporting landscape. The involvement of Shikhar Dhawan further strengthened the tournament’s profile and highlighted its ambition to bring greater attention to emerging cricketing talent.

Through its multi-city selection trials and franchise-based format, MPL sought to create new opportunities for aspiring cricketers while promoting Malda as a growing centre for sporting activity. The initiative represented an effort to combine grassroots development, competitive cricket and professional sports presentation, with the objective of giving the region’s young talent a platform to pursue its ambitions and make its mark in the game.
